The Russian Airborne Forces (VDV — Vozdushno-desantnye voyska) are the elite rapid reaction force of the Russian military, distinguished by their blue and white striped telnyashka undershirt and blue berets as symbols of Russian military prestige. The VDV has been deployed in virtually every major Russian military operation of recent decades — the seizure of Crimea's Simferopol airport in 2014, operations in Syria from 2015, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine beginning in 2022.
VDV units are trained for both airborne and air assault operations, maintaining a rapid deployment capability that enables the Kremlin to project military force on short notice. In Ukraine, VDV units were at the forefront of the initial assault on Kyiv before being repulsed, and subsequently played major roles in the grinding attritional battles across eastern Ukraine.
